The Island pays tribute to broadcast legend Sir Terry

Today, former BBC Jersey radio presenter Deputy Murray Norton – who said he had been a ‘major influence’ on why he went into radio – spoke of his sadness on hearing that Sir Terry had passed away from cancer.

Sir Terry, known for his velvety voice on radio and television, visited Jersey several times during his career including when he helped to host an international gala concert in May 1978.

The concert, which was broadcast live from the Odeon into the homes of millions of listeners across Europe, featured performances from musicians from England, France and Germany.

In August of the same year Sir Terry returned to Jersey to compere the Miss Variety beauty queen contest. And in 1981, the Limerick-born star was mobbed by fans when he broadcast a show from the General Hospital.

Sir Terry, who also visited Jersey in February 1976 to officially open the electrical shop Fuzzey, was last on air on BBC Radio 2 just under three months ago, on Sunday 8 November. Days later he was forced to pull out of presenting Children In Need at the last minute because of health issues.
