Jersey helps hundreds of East African schoolchildren

A meeting was recently held by the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission to discuss the further help that Islanders could provide in the continent by volunteering to take part in this year’s community projects.

Since the commission was established in 1973 it has organised parties of volunteers from Jersey to take part in voluntary projects in developing countries.

This year, volunteers are being sought to build and equip classroom blocks at Mifumi Secondary School in Uganda or at Ng’andu Primary School in Zambia.

Thousands of Islanders have completed more than 100 projects in some of the world’s poorest communities over the years, which has included the building of classrooms, staff accommodation and health clinics, as well as water sanitation programmes.
