It would be ‘tricky’ to ban controversial pinch collars for dogs, says Environment Minister

An Islander set up an online petition earlier this month after spotting a dog in town wearing a pinch collar that is designed to hurt the animal when it pulls at the lead. The petition has so far been signed by 1,500 people.

The collars are currently not illegal to sell in Jersey or anywhere else in Britain except Wales.

Environment Minister Steve Luce said he was aware of the petition and added: ‘I will be talking further with the States vet in the coming days to see if there is any need to take these matters any further.

‘I think it would be very tricky to outlaw particular types of collar at the moment but if we consider that an animal is suffering cruelty we have the legislation to pursue it,’ said Deputy Luce.

People who witness any incident of animal cruelty should contact the States police on 612612 or call the Environment Department on 441600.
