Crane swings into action on JE’s £17m sub-station project

The operation marked a major step in Jersey Electricity’s £17 million project to construct a new sub-station at the site.

Contractors Jayen Ltd lifted the containers over trees and into position, where they will form site offices, a canteen and a toilet block for the two-year project, which is designed to boost the electricity supply in the north and west of St Helier.

St Aubin’s Road was closed to all traffic except the Airport bus on Sunday from 7 am until midday while crane operators moved the steel cabins. And the bus could only get past by using the pavement.

Work in the area began earlier this month and followed 12 months of site investigation by Jersey Electricity to ensure that the old quarry wall at Westmount Gardens could be safely removed.

Contractors will continue to clear the site before building a new wall that will shield the new sub-station, which is due to be built by French company INEO, who have built several other units in the Island.
