Doorman taken to A&E after being hit on head by club-goer

The Havana nightclub doorman was taken to Accident and Emergency after Alexander Ferguson (31) struck him on the side of the head as he attempted to leave the building in the early hours of 18 October.

Ferguson, who had been drinking at the club for several hours before the incident, had lashed out after becoming angry when he was told he could not leave because staff were dealing with another man, the court heard on Thursday.

Police legal adviser Advocate Matthew Maletroit said that the defendant had no recollection of the incident and it was only when he saw CCTV footage that he admitted assaulting the man.

He added that once Ferguson had seen the footage, he told the police that he was ‘gutted’ for what he had done.

Representing himself in court, Ferguson, who has several previous convictions and was sentenced for breaching the peace by fighting in September 2014, said that he hit the doorman because he was being pushed back.

He admitted that it was ‘a stupid reaction’.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris, who was presiding, said he accepted that the assault had been spontaneous, but added there was no excuse for his behaviour.

‘Members of staff in licensed premises have the responsibility to exercise a degree of control for the enjoyment of everyone going there,’ he said.

‘I suspect that you wouldn’t have done that if you hadn’t had that much to drink.’

Ferguson was fined £500 and was ordered to pay £200 compensation to his victim.
