Walker hits back at his critics at abuse inquiry – but admits to Newsnight failure

Mr Walker admitted that he appeared ‘shifty’ as he was questioned over Operation Rectangle – the police investigation into child abuse – and the political background to the case.

He added that his performance was so ‘appalling’ it left him on the brink of quitting politics.

The ex-politician made the admissions as he appeared at the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry yesterday, and went on to concede that the ‘disastrous’ interview may have deterred victims from coming forward.

But though conceding that he made mistakes as the world’s media focused its attention on Jersey, he went to accuse former Health Minister Stuart Syvret and the then police chief Graham Power and his deputy Lenny Harper of colluding to use the media to enhance their agenda and bring down senior government officials rather than to help victims of child abuse.
