Wheelchair access not needed, say taxi drivers

New regulations announced last September by Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel will require all taxis – which in Jersey use public ranks – to have wheelchair-access vehicles by 2018.

But the reforms have provoked a backlash from drivers, who are concerned at the cost of the the vehicles, and now JTDA president Mick Tostevin has published an open letter on the internet claiming that the States have not learned from past lessons on the matter.

In his letter he says that the States ordered that 20 wheelchair-access cabs be put onto the public rank 15 years ago, and learned afterwards that disabled Islanders prefered to call for cabs, which in Jersey are run by private hire firms.
