Report cargo-spill plank sightings, public asked

Dozens of bundles of wood were swept off the cargo ship MV Koningsborg last week after it lost power during a storm while travelling from Finland to Tunisia.

The ship had to be towed to the port of Brest in Brittany and much of the cargo was left floating in the Channel.

Over the weekend, sightings of large bundles of wood were reported in the waters around Guernsey and Herm, with planks washing up at several beaches.

Up to four tonnes of wood was washed up on Guernsey’s Lihou island alone.

Jersey Coastguard has been monitoring the movement of the wood for several days and says there is little risk of it reaching the Island’s waters.

But Islanders are being urged to get in contact with the Coastguard if they see any of the planks.
