Hospital: No easing of bed shortage

The JEP reported last week that a red alert had been triggered following the extended new year weekend which resulted in some surgeries having to be cancelled.

Staff sickness and patients being stuck in hospital while medics tried to find them appropriate post-hospital care, combined with a higher than usual number of emergency admissions, caused the bed shortage.

The red alert came into effect on Monday 4 January and lasted until 5 pm on Wednesday, when it was downgraded to amber.
