History lesson from Holocaust survivor

Sami Steigmann and his parents were imprisoned in a concentration camp in eastern Europe for three years of the Second World War when he was a small child. They all survived to make a new life in Israel, where he served in the Israeli Air Force before moving to America in 1968.

Mr Steigmann said: ‘My mission in life is to reach as many young people as I can. I want to promote tolerance, and to show that by becoming responsible people, we can change our perspective in life and make the world a better place for ourselves, our children and grandchildren.’

The annual commemoration begins at 1 pm in the Occupation Tapestry Gallery at the Maritime Museum, and will be followed by wreath-laying ceremony at the New North Quay Lighthouse Memorial to the 21 Islanders who perished in German camps and prisons.
