Children’s Services failed to protect alleged abuse victim, senior police officer tells inquiry

Chief Inspector Alison Fossey told the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry on Thursday that during the early 2000s, Children’s Services were reluctant to act on cases where the police had not prosecuted.

She referred to one case where a young girl had allegedly been sexually abused, and her mother had continued to allow the suspect to visit the family home.

Chief Insp Fossey also told the inquiry that between 2000 and 2005, certain cases went undiscovered and were not followed up as a result of the police failing to keep their databases up to date.

During the case of the young girl, Chief Insp Fossey wrote to the then head of the Criminal Investigations Department André Bonjour to outline her concerns about Children’s Services.
