Abuse inquiry costs top £11.4 million

Up until the end of October – the most recent figures available – the cost of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry was £11,397,293.

A budget of £6 million was initially granted to investigate allegations of child abuse in Jersey care homes dating back as far as the end of the Second World War.

However, in March, the States agreed to provide an additional £14 million from the Strategic Reserve Fund to ensure that the inquiry could continue its work, on the basis that the team would operate within a revised budget of £13.7 million.

The majority of the total spend so far has been on inquiry team fees and expenses which has topped more than £8 million. Meanwhile, more than £1.2 million has been spent on hotel and travel expenses for the inquiry team.
