In the UK more than 15,000 of the futuristic self-balancing scooters have been seized at ports and airports over fears that certain models were in danger of overheating, exploding or catching fire.
Nine in ten hoverboards imported from the European Union in the last few weeks have failed simple safety checks, with many having plugs fitted without fuses, faulty cables or chargers that can burst into flames.
