Serial offender jailed after attacks on police officers and dog

Mark Anthony Derrick punched one officer and repeatedly punched and kicked another to the head and upper body while hurling abuse at both men during the early morning disturbance in town.

The 24-year-old then kicked a police dog before he was restrained in two sets of leg straps and placed in a police van.

Following the incident, the dog handler, who was not injured in the attack, described it as one of the most violent cases of resisting arrest he had seen in his nine-year career.

Derrick, from Scotland, pleaded guilty to assault, grave and criminal assault, cruelty to an animal, violently resisting arrest and a separate offence of obstructing a police officer and was jailed on Friday for 15 months by the Royal Court.
