Angels to return to help shoppers this Christmas

The St Helier Angels initiative has been launched by the parish in partnership with telecoms company Sure, with volunteers helping shoppers from late November until the weekend before Christmas.

St Helier and Sure are asking volunteers to enrol for the job, which will include helping people carry shopping to the car, calling taxis or generally providing assistance during the festive period.

The initiative was held for the first time in 2006 and has proved to be a scheme in the lead up to the festive season each year.

Daphne East, town centre manager, said: ‘The St Helier Angels is an initiative aimed at making St Helier an even more attractive place to come during the Christmas shopping period.

‘The angels offers a fantastic volunteer opportunity that will really put people in touch with people.

‘It suits anyone with an outgoing personality and I believe that if you would like to help your fellow islanders this Christmas, then you should definitely consider volunteering for the angels.

‘I’d like to thank Sure for their sponsorship of the angels and Resilience Development Company for providing training, to ensure that our volunteers are well prepared for their roles.’

The St Helier Angels will be given clearly identifiable uniforms to wear and will assist shoppers with a range of tasks, from carrying shopping to the car to calling taxis or even picking up discarded litter from the street.

Louise Burrows, marketing manager at Sure said: ‘As a prominent retailer in St Helier, we really want to help the angels ensure that St Helier is a great place to shop this Christmas.

‘The success of the initiative depends on Islanders volunteering, so I urge anyone who is interested to contact Daphne and her team.’

Anyone interested in volunteering should email daphne.east@posh.gov.je.
