The awards ceremony celebrated the achievements of 114 graduates in obtaining degrees from Plymouth University and London South Bank University in subjects including business and management, social science, financial services, construction management and architectural technology, with childhood studies being the most popular course.

The head of higher education at University College Jersey, Ben Bennett, said the event was testimony to the fact that Islanders are able to access a first class university education in the Island.

‘We were delighted to welcome our graduates and their families and friends to this wonderful event,’ he said.

‘We are so proud of their achievements as many of our graduates have exceeded their academic expectations and had firm job offers before they completed their final exams.

‘Our university community keeps growing year after year and it is at events like this that we are reminded what all the hard work is for.’

The two-year foundation degree courses offered at Highlands also include work experience in local businesses.

When students graduate they have the option to study for an honours degree over one year with one of the partner universities in the UK.

Many also study for professional qualifications concurrent to the degree programme.

This year’s graduates were a mix of ages from those who began courses straight from school to mature students returning to full-time education.

They received their degrees from Professor Simon Payne of Plymouth University and Marc Burton, managing director of local building firm Camerons, who presented degrees to the students who had studied with London South Bank University.

Mr Bennet said even more Islanders had enrolled this year with 180 beginning courses last month.
