JERSEY’S Treasury Minister has said that he is ‘looking forward’ to forming a working relationship with the new leader of the Labour Party.

Jeremy Corbyn swept to power in the Labour leadership election on Saturday after winning more than 60 per cent of the vote of party members and affiliates.

The controversial left-winger said during a leadership hustings in July on the BBC’s Sunday Politics programme that he thought ‘tax havens like the Channel Islands’ should be closed.

But Senator Alan Maclean remained confident that Jersey could form a positive relationship with Mr Corbyn.

He said: ‘It’s no surprise that Jeremy Corbyn has won the leadership election looking at the recent polls.

‘It will be interesting to see over the coming weeks if he can form a credible opposition with credible policies.’

‘I appreciate the recent comments he has made about crown dependencies but quite often comments are made during election campaigns which change when they have the opportunity to find out the facts.

‘Jersey, and the other crown dependencies, operates to the benefit of the United Kingdom being one of the internationally recognised best regulated transparent jurisdictions.’

Mr Corbyn started naming his new shadow cabinet last night amid fears that there could be a split in the Labour party as moderate MPs refuse to serve on his front bench.

Jeremy Corbyn has now announced the majority of the top positions in his first shadow cabinet:

  • His Leadership rival Andy Burnham is shadow home secretary
  • His election campaign manager, John McDonnell, is shadow chancellor
  • Hilary Benn is shadow foreign secretary
  • Angela Eagle is shadow business secretary and shadow first secretary of state
  • Lewisham MP, Heidi Alexander, is shadow health secretary
  • Lord Falconer remains as shadow justice secretary
  • London mayoral candidate Diane Abbott is shadow minister for international development

As addition to the new appointments, there have been a number of resignations from the shadow cabinet:

  • Former shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna said he would leave the front bench by ‘mutual agreement’
  • Shadow health minister Jamie Reed resigned immediately on Twitter after the result was announced
