Mr Robot powers down for last time

The popular mascot was built from waste electrical items including vacuum cleaners, irons and TV remote controls by artist Ian Rolls in 2012 to help the Transport Department raise awareness about recycling.

Since then he has travelled across the Island and visited several schools, before finally making his home at the entrance of the household recycling centre at Bellozanne Gate 4.

But he is now due to be evicted – and dismantled – as the space he occupies is to be used for new traffic measures to improve access for customers at busy times.

Emma Richardson-Calladine, recycling manager at TTS, said: ‘Mr Robot will be missed from the household recycling centre but he will be disassembled and all of his electrical parts will be sent to the UK for specialist recycling.

‘He has been a huge success and we hope to create something equally engaging in a future campaign, so watch this space.’

The department considered moving Mr Robot to a new home, either elsewhere at the Bellozanne recycling centre or another site, but they feared that due to his age and fragility he wouldn’t survive the move.

Mr Rolls said that he was pleased his design had helped get the recycling message across, and added: ‘They told me about their plans for him and I had no problem with it.

‘He was always going to have a limited life span and it is quite amazing that he has gone on so long.

‘He has become something of a celebrity, but I have noticed he is looking a bit sad and sooner or later things are going to drop off, so it’s nice that they are letting him get gracefully recycled himself, which is fitting.’

In 2012, there was a mystery surrounding the giant robot made from discarded electrical goods.

As a light-hearted gesture, Mr Rolls had used a silver glitter ball to depict the robot’s private parts.

The robot was taken to the Royal Jersey Showground for Jersey Live to make his debut public appearance that year.

But on the Saturday morning, it was discovered that the glitter ball had been removed from its personal position and been replaced by a much smaller one.

Things got even stranger, because by Monday morning that little glitter ball had disappeared as well.
