A NATIONAL sea safety campaign is due to be promoted in the Island this summer.

The UK’s Amateur Swimming Association and Royal National Lifeboat Institution has set up the ‘Swim Safe’ initiative, which is designed to promote safety for beach-goers as the weather warms up.

Free sessions are being held around the UK and will be available to Islanders in mid August at Westpark’s Jersey Marine Lake.

Instructors will be on hand between the 10th and 16th August with a sea safety campaign aimed at seven to 14 year olds who can already swim a minimum of 25 meters.

Sessions begin with a ten-minute talk from lifeguards, followed by half an hour of instruction from swimming tutors.

An RNLI spokesman said: ‘At the RNLI we respect the power of the sea, but we believe it’s perfectly possible to enjoy the water safely.

‘Most children learn to swim in an indoor pool, which is a safe and familiar environment. This programme will give them the opportunity to test and improve their swimming ability in a different environment.’

A recent ASA study found that one in five parents did not allow their children to swim in the sea as they felt it was too dangerous.
