Town gets in festival mood this weekend

The two-day festival in Broad Street and Parade Gardens and in the Romerils car park will feature local bands, a hip-hop showcase, a ‘saints and sinners’ fancy-dress parade and a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament.

There will also be performances by the Cannon O’Rafferty School of Irish Dance and demonstrations by the De Mond Gymnastics Academy, in addition to graffiti art from the Inkramental Crew, a set from DJ Stefunk, dodgems, bouncy castles and face painting.

Craft and food stalls will be open during the festival, which is its third year and has been organised as part of the celebrations for St Helier Day.

Town Centre manager Daphne East said that the event, which will run from 10 am to 8 pm tomorrow and on Sunday, will have something for everyone.

‘The fete has been really successful over the past two years and this year we have tried to expand and add something new,’ she said.

‘With the fancy dress parade I think there will be a real carnival feel to the town.

‘It is exciting to have such a range of entertainment on offer and with the hip-hop showcase, the DJ set and the graffiti artists, we think we will get a good response from young people.’

The Band of the Island of Jersey will open the event at 10 am tomorrow, with the fancy-dress parade taking place from West’s Centre to the Town Hall at 7.45 pm tomorrow and the martial arts tournament scheduled to take place on from 10 am on Sunday.

There will also be a pilgrimage from the Town Church to Elizabeth Castle in memory of the patron saint of St Helier at 2 pm on Sunday.
