Senator ‘seriously ill’ after States business trip to Africa

The Senator spent three days in intensive care in a hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, before being transferred back to the UK on Sunday.

Informing the States of Senator Ozouf’s condition during roll call on Tuesday, Chief Minister Ian Gorst said that his colleague fell ill during an ‘intense’ and ‘gruelling’ trip through Africa.

He said: ‘During his trip he visited many Jersey Overseas Aid projects in East Africa and central Africa, including opening a school. He then travelled to Rwanda, and on behalf of the RJAHS and Jersey Overseas Aid Commission he inspected part of the highly successful Jersey Cow project, before holding talks with ministers and the President of Rwanda.

‘After representing the island – for the first time – at the prestigious World Economic Forum in Cape Town, he undertook numerous bilateral political, diplomatic and business engagements.

‘On Friday Senator Ozouf was taken seriously ill and spent three days in intensive care in a hospital in Lagos. He made enough progress to return to the UK overnight on Sunday.

‘Senator Ozouf is now recovering and undergoing further tests in London before returning home.’

The Chief Minister added that despite his best efforts to encourage him to rest, Senator Ozouf was carrying on with his States work. ‘He is disappointed that he cannot be with the Assembly today,’ he added. Members then expressed their good wishes for the Senator’s full recovery with the traditional stamping of feet.
