Guernsey police investigating child abuse allegations

The news comes after detectives in Jersey revealed the details of an investigation, code-named Operation Whistle, that has uncovered up to 45 suspects – 13 of whom are described as figures of public prominence.

Both investigations follow the remit of a wider police investigation known as Operation Hydrant, which spans police forces across the British Isles. Operation Hydrant has identified as many as 1,400 suspects, 200 of whom are now dead.

The States police have confirmed that they were working closely with their colleagues in Guernsey and were sharing intelligence. In Guernsey a police spokesman said that one case of alleged child sexual abuse was being investigated.

‘Officers are currently investigating this matter, although the case remains in its infancy,’ he said. ‘This is a complex and sensitive investigation. As such, no further details will be released at this time.’

Earlier this month Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull, who is leading the investigation in Jersey alongside Detective Chief Inspector Allison Fossey, said he expected some suspects to be brought in for questioning ‘imminently’.

In a brief statement, the States police said: ‘We have been in communication with Guernsey colleagues in respect of the national Operation Hydrant and will continue to do so in order to share best practice and, where necessary and appropriate, share intelligence.’
