Tributes paid following the death of former St Saviour Constable Peter Hanning

  • Former Constable dies aged 70
  • Remembered by friends as a ‘gentleman’ who loved sailing

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former St Saviour Constable and ex commodore of the St Helier Yacht Club, who died on Monday.

Peter Hanning, who was described as a ‘successful sailor’ and ‘a gentleman’, died at Silver Springs Care Home at the age of 70.

Mr Hanning, a life member of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club, was a competitive sailor who regularly competed in Round the Island races in the Isle of Wight.

He was elected unopposed as St Saviour Constable in 2007, before losing his seat to current parish Constable Sadie Rennard.

She said: ‘We were absolutely devastated when we heard. He was a gentleman who loved the parish and I am glad that after retiring he and his wife were able to travel.

‘He was very well loved in the parish and I have tried to carry on some of the work he started – it is a great loss for us as a parish.’

Meanwhile, Bill Harris, honorary sailing secretary at the RCIYC and friend of Mr Hanning for over 30 years, said that the former States Member had had a significant impact on the sailing community.

‘He has always been recognised as a very competitive, competent and successful racing sailor.

‘I started sailing with him very shortly afterwards and competed in at least twenty Round the Island races at the Isle of Wight.

‘He made a major contribution to the sport not only as a competitor, but also as a leading Royal Yachting Association race official, still carrying out the duties of protest committee chairman and RYA Umpire until shortly before his death.

‘He is a great loss to the Island’s sailing community, to which he contributed so much, and to his many friends. We all mourn his passing and send our sincerest condolences to Elaine, sons James and Alex and their families at this saddest of times. He will be greatly missed.’
