FOLLOWING this week’s news that a Jerseyman is to join the cast of EastEnders, we took to the streets of St Helier to see what Islanders think of the news.

Jonny Labey (22) has already begun filming on the BBC’s flagship serial drama and will be appearing on screen from June.

The former Grouville School and Victoria College student will play former club rep Paul Coker in the show, which broadcasts on primetime BBC One four nights a week and regularly attracts audiences of up to nine million people.

The son of Mark and Colette Labey, he has been a regular on the Island’s performance scene for a number of years.

Speaking to the JEP, Islander Sam Finnegan (47) from St Helier said: ‘I think it’s great that a local person is going to be representing the Island in a soap.

‘I’m looking forward to watching him on screen from June.’

Meanwhile, 49-year-old St Saviour resident James Case said that he thought it was great to see an Islander doing so well on a national level’.

‘Good for him,’ he said. ‘There are plenty of budding actors in Jersey so it’s great that he’s been given a chance.

‘I hope they don’t kill him off too soon!’

Anne-Marié Halls (57) from St Martin added: ‘I think it’s a real feat.

‘Obviously he’s worked really hard to become part of the cast and I’m sure he will really enjoy it.’
