LIBERTY Wharf shopping complex will soon be a step closer to full capacity after it was announced that a major UK menswear store will be moving to the site this summer.

  • Moss Bros is a UK-based clothing store which specialises in dress wear and formal attire
  • It was founded in 1851 by Moses Moss
  • The chain has more than 150 outlets, including a concept store in Canary Wharf
  • In 2003, Moss Bros opened its first shop on Cunard’s QE2 cruise ship[/breakout]

Formal wear and wedding clothes hire specialist Moss Bros is due to open its doors in late June, filling the second-last remaining letting space on the former abattoir site, which was opened in 2010.

The Moss Bros chain, which has 135 stores across the British Isles, is being brought to the Island by Sandpiper CI and will occupy the empty space next to George.

Since the complex was opened five years ago, shops have been slow to move in, but Jackie Maratier, Liberty Wharf’s property manager, said that with the forthcoming arrival the building would be at 95 per cent occupancy.

‘We are delighted that another large UK brand is coming to Jersey, as it will be a huge benefit to the Island.’

Tony O’Neill, the chief executive of Sandpiper CI, said that the new store would create a minimum of six jobs, adding that it was ‘a significant milestone’ for the company.

‘This will be the tenth retail brand we have introduced to the Island in the last five years,’ Mr O’Neill added.

‘Our strategy of introducing market-leading retail brands to the Channel Islands has significantly changed the local retail landscape.

‘During this time we have created more than 200 jobs and have widened choice for Islanders and visitors alike.

‘Moss Bros is the UK’s number one brand in suit hire.

‘One of the benefits will be that Islanders travelling to the UK for a event will be able to order in Jersey and pick up what they ordered in the UK.’

Medium Rhianna Hughes

A PSYCHIC called in to cleanse former abattoir Liberty Wharf of the souls of dead animals in 2011 said that the shopping centre was ghost-free.

Rhianna Hughes, who describes herself as a medium and Wiccan, or witch, said that there was ‘nothing bad down there’ but that she still performed the ritual.

It normally involves burning a bundle of herbs, known as smudge sticks, but for health and safety reasons Ms Hughes was not allowed to start a fire.

‘I sprinkled the herbs on the floor and asked for positive energy,’ she said. ‘Cleansing moves on stagnant energy and when I next went down there it felt a lot better.’

Ms Hughes was asked to perform the ritual by a concerned Islander. ‘I was contacted by one of my clients who said that he thought Liberty Wharf needed cleansing,’ she said.

‘I spoke to the people at Liberty Wharf and they let me in to do it. ‘There was nothing bad down there, but if I had gone in before they started their building work there may have been more energy.’
