He was a ‘Rootes man’, having previously owned a grey Hillman Minx in the 1950s, followed by a maroon and beige 1958 Singer Gazelle Series II (J20513) and then a light blue 1965 Singer Gazelle Series V (J13823).

But in 1968 he traded this in for J6456, attracted by the upgraded 1725cc engine and its tartan red and black paintwork. The car was purchased second-hand from the Jersey Rootes dealer, St Helier Garages.
