Sources have been keen to stress that firefighters will not replace paramedics and will never be called out when ambulance crews are available. They will only be used when ambulance staff are temporarily unavailable and it is hoped that the initiative will ensure that trained emergency service personnel are on scene within minutes of a call before paramedics arrive at the scene.
