And today they were due to gather with hundreds of other veterans from around the world at Ouistreham beach to remember the heroes who landed there as part of Operation Overlord.
The event, which will be attended by the Queen, Prince Charles, and other international heads of state including US President Barack Obama as well as the Bailiff Sir Michael Birt and Jersey’s Chief Minister Ian Gorst, was expected to be watched by millions all over the world.
Meanwhile, a historic Lancaster bomber – one of just two still airworthy – thundered over Jersey yesterday as it used the Island as a base ahead of the celebrations.
