Gough single lands Grouville place in final

GROUVILLE reached their second consecutive Trinity Shield final with a 1-0 victory away to St Lawrence on Saturday afternoon.

The winning move of a well-contested and closely-fought game came in stoppage time at the end of first half, Jonny Gough tapping home from the edge of the six-yard area. Teenager Kamen Nafkha instigated the goal after shaking off his marker up St Lawrence’s right before sliding the ball across the face of goal for Gough.

Saints Jason Watts was the busier of the goalkeepers throughout while Grouville’s defence was well marshalled by Peter Gough. St Lawrence, strongly represented in defence by the Norman family – brothers Tom, Anthony and Michael – had chances to equalise; the best probably falling to Aaron Parkinson but he narrowly failed to make contact with the ball on a far post following a cross from St Lawrence’s right.

In stoppage time Grouville goalkeeper Matt Brookland was beaten by substitute Neil Spacie’s shot on the turn from 20 yards but the ball cannoned back into play off an upright. Grouville now play the winners of St Brelade or St John in the final tomorrow week at Springfield. St John were reinstated into the competition at the weekend as a result of St Clement playing an ineligible player in their 6-1 quarter-final win against St John the previous weekend.
