St Peter’s 2-1 Coca-Cola Combination Division I victory at home to champions Jersey Scottish on Saturday has now thrown the title race wide open.

St Peter’s win moved them into top spot on goal-difference above Trinity, both have 32 points with three matches to play.

Scottish’s first league defeat has left them on 29 points but with four games remaining.

Dean Godwin, St Peter’s captain, said: ‘Yes it’s all very interesting now.

Manager Jon Trigg and assistant Martin King have organised us well this season and having added quality as well belief has grown among the players.

‘Our aim at the start of the season was to improve on last year’s position and do well in the cup competitions.

We have three games to go and we’ll be looking to get nine points.

‘If we achieve that we will have a minimum of a play-off.

‘If it’s a three-way play-off I feel the League should look at the results between the clubs and the one with the best record plays in the title play-off with the other two playing in a semi-final.’ Scottish manager Bob Kearsey said: ‘The St Peter match was a game of few chances, although Craig Leitch should have scored for us in the first half and Gary Freeman for them.

‘Up to the penalty I thought we controlled it but after that we sat back, we were pressed back further by their substitutions and it all went pear-shaped for us.

‘I’d have been happy with a draw after they equalised but the goal shook us up.

We then allowed Peter Vincenti to run too far with the ball and he scored a goal I thought Jamie Brewster should have saved.

‘If all the teams finish level I’d prefer a mini group play-off.

If it happens I hope it can be arranged within a week so who ever wins has a chance to recover in time for the Upton.’ Trinity manager Joe Morley said: ‘I was not bothered what result Saturday would have come up with; if we will all our games we will have a minimum of a play-off so it didn’t bother me.

‘If three teams finish level then great.

It’s fantastic to have a third club in the running, we’re all trying to raise the standard of the game and we must be doing because three clubs are in the championship race this season and not just two.’ The next Division I matches are on Saturday.

Scottish play away to St Paul’s; St Peter host Grouville; Trinity host Rozel Rovers while Jersey Wanderers entertain First Tower.

Wanderers kick-off at 2 o’clock with the other three games starting at 2.30.
