Football:Tower v Sylvans for inaugural Ladies Upton

Coca-Cola Combination Jersey champions First Tower United will host the inaugural match, against Guernsey Sylvans, at La Hague Manor on Saturday 23 April.

The game will be a 10 o’clock kick-off on the morning of the men’s senior Upton game between Jersey Scottish and Guernsey Sylvans, making it a big day out for members of the Sarnian club.

The JFA Council sanctioned the new fixture last night and as part of their Centenary celebrations a new trophy is being put up to be called ‘The Jersey Football Association Centenary Trophy’.

JFA president Charlie Tostevin said: ‘The associations in both island’s support this fixture and I’d like to thank everyone involved for getting this new inter-insular game up and running for this season.

‘It was mentioned earlier in the season and I thought it would only happen next season.

It just shows that Jersey and Guernsey officials can work together and I thank them all for their good communication and forward thinking in giving ladies football another game.’ The match will take place annually in the same island as the men’s senior Upton.

The early kick-off for the ladies’ Upton is to allow for spectators to stay and watch the possibility of extra-time and penalties, should they be needed, as the the men’s Upton is a 2 pm kick-off at Springfield.

n Centenary celebrations continue next month with a ladies’ match against the RAF on Sunday 8 May and the following day a men’s game against a Football Association XI.

Admittance is free to both matches at Springfield, the FA game starting at 6 pm.
