GALLERY: Big numbers at Biggest Book Sale

The charity’s annual Biggest Book Sale, which is now in its 22nd year, attracted hundreds of Islanders who were keen to find a bargain among the hardbacks and paperbacks.

The two-day event, which was held at the Royal Jersey Showground, raised almost £20,000 – taking the total amount raised by the event over the past two decades to more than £377,000.

Dozens of volunteers manned the stalls for the event, which was open from 9.30 am until 4.30 pm.

Ken Syvret, the chairman of the charity’s Jersey branch, said that the event had been busy all weekend and added that, more than 20 years on, he remains humbled by the generosity of Islanders.

At the end of the sale Mr Syvret was recognised for his fundraising efforts when he was given the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association’s southern region volunteer of the year award.

He said: ‘We used five lorries – two making two journeys – to take all the books from the store in St Ouen to Trinity.

‘We raised £19,339.75 in total and I am delighted at the response again this year from both donors and our many supporters.

‘But it would not be possible without the help of my committee here in Jersey, my family, colleagues in the Lions Club and our friends at the churches in St Ouen who form a band of over 50, helping in so many ways during the weekend and the days leading to it.

‘I am grateful to those who lent the vehicles and the drivers.’

Money raised from the sale goes to the national charity, with much of the money then coming back to the Island to support guide dogs in Jersey.
