Large parts of Route de Trodez were closed this week and will remain shut while the repair work is carried out. Work is due to carry on until 21 June.

‘Strengthening and patching works’, carried out by local contractors, have been ongoing for two months.

A UK firm called Eurovia Specialist Treatments are being employed to lay a special type of micro-asphalt called GripFibre, which only they are licensed to lay. The material, which was used during resurfacing works in St John and in other northern parishes, has previously been criticised for its appearance.

In 2016, St John Constable Chris Taylor said cracks had appeared in six places less than a year since the material was
laid.

A spokesman for the Growth, Housing and Environment Department said: ‘Eurovia Specialist Treatments are a UK company. They are employing Jersey companies for the parts of the work that do not require the specialist skills that are not available locally.

‘Strengthening and patching works carried out by a local asphalt contractor have been ongoing for two months in advance of this package of work by the UK company. The full road closures for laying GripFibre started from Tuesday 28 May. The full closure has been timed during the school half-term to avoid school traffic. We have advertised closures from 8am to 8pm through to Sunday 2 June.

‘This includes a time allowance for poor weather, but we hope to be finished the before then. We have advertised further road off-peak closures during the subsequent week to allow for raising any manhole covers that are too low once the GripFibre has been laid.’

The area affected is on Route de Trodez between the junction of Rue à la Pendue, Rue des Fouothets and Route de Vinchelez.

Vehicles involved in the works are being stored at the Pres d’Auvergne car park along Route de L’Etacq. The car park will be occupied until 7 June in relation to the work on Route de Trodez and then for a further three weeks after 7 June in relation to a project on Route des Hetres in St Peter.
