The Jersey Doctors On Call service is moving from the Newgate Street end of the hospital for a three-month trial.
It will continue to provide a GP service every day of the year outside of the normal opening hours of surgeries at the following times:
6 pm to 11 pm from Monday to Friday.
Noon to 11 pm on Saturday.
8 am to 11 pm on Sundays and public holidays.
It is hoped that the new location will be more accessible for patients who require urgent treatment but are not emergency cases.
The Emergency Department will continue to deal with the most serious ailments and injuries, such as major bites or cuts, chest pains, strokes, breathing difficulties and severe bleeding.
Dr Daniel Albert, clinical lead for JDOC, said he believed the new location would raise the profile of the service.
‘When patients call for advice, they can rest assured that they will be speaking to a local GP. Relocating to the Emergency Department will enable patients to obtain appropriate treatment from the appropriate doctor at the appropriate place,’ he said.
Rob Sainsbury, the Hospital’s managing director, added that the new location would allow better co-operation with the Emergency Department.
‘The former location at the other end of the building created a geographical barrier to the provision of out-of-hours urgent care,’ he said.
‘Now the two services can work more closely together, which can only benefit patients.’
The service can be contacted by calling 445445 to either see a GP in the Hospital or to request a home visit.
The cost of seeing a GP out of hours is unchanged, with appointments for Jersey residents, with health cards, costing £56 and home visits costing £112 during daytime hours up to 11 pm or £143 for overnight visits between 11 pm and 8 am.
A free telephone advice service is also provided at all times.
