About £130 in cash was taken from the Gunsite Café in St Aubin’s Bay when the thieves forced their way in through a beachside window and broke open the till between 5 am and 5.30 am.
The café’s owner, Anne Elliott, said that the cash and the till were replaceable but she had been left feeling uneasy by the incident.
‘It was my sister who came in and found what had happened. She didn’t realise at first because, thankfully, there was no mess.
‘They have just taken the cash and gone. It’s not nice at Christmas, but worse things can happen. It’s just not nice knowing someone has broken in and been here,’ said the 61-year-old.
The States police are appealing for anyone with information, or who might have been in the area at the time and seen someone acting suspiciously, to come forward.
‘It’s a risky thing to do because there are dog-walkers and others around at that time sometimes. It’s not easy to get to the window too – they’d have to have climbed round.
‘Nothing like this has happened before, certainly not in my time here,’ said Mrs Elliott, who has owned the café for two years.
No one has been arrested in connection with the break-in. Anyone with information is urged to contact the States police on 612612 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
