Florence – a 17-week-old beagle – gulped down the joke dog mess while being walked on Tuesday.
Now her owner, finance worker Neil Ginnis, is urging other dog owners to help keep the streets clean and pick up rubbish while out walking their pets.
‘One of the things you notice when you have a dog is how much rubbish there is on the ground,’ said the 42-year-old, who is married and has three daughters. ‘I would like to encourage dog owners to perhaps pick up litter if they come across it and do their bit to keep the streets clean. Their dog may have navigated past it but the next dog might not.’
Describing the incident, Mr Ginnis said his beagle – a breed renowned for devouring anything in sight, regardless of whether it is edible – pounced on the rubber poo while being walked near Jardins de la Mer. She was taken to New Era Veterinary Hospital, where vets removed the object with an endoscope. ‘We were very lucky, as we managed to get her to the vets quickly, before it had the chance to get into her intestines. Fortunately she has recovered now and is back to her usual self,’ said Mr Ginnis, who lives in St Clement.
Posting about the incident on Facebook, New Era said: ‘We regularly see pets who have eaten strange things and today was no different!
‘Florence’s owners did the right thing and brought her to see us straight away.
‘If your pet ever eats anything unusual ensure to always get in touch with us as soon as possible for advice on appropriate treatment.’
