THERE were a pair of travelling teams from Jersey RFC’s Minis and Juniors, as both the U16 Girls and U15 Boys returned home with victories under their belts.
The U16 Girls attended a “Pitch up & Play” event successfully organised by Petersfield Rugby Club.
The 12-strong Caesarean squad had their ranks bolstered by four players joining them from Fawley, over three competitive games of rugby.
The level of the side’s rugby has improved immensely over recent weeks, which culminated in a 27-0 win over Tottonian Titans.
Plaudits went to the try scorers – Sari Hunt (2), Cara Williams and Hannah Stevenson (1) – as well as Brooke Godwin and Iris Wilmer as most improved players on the tackle.
Maisie Kybett also impressed for the sidestep of the day, along with Paige de Gruchy, who was kicker of the match, and Olivia Winch for refusing to let anything stand in her way.
In what turned out to truly be a game of two halves, Jersey U15 Boys defeated hosts Hove 10-21 in their third league game of the campaign.
The first 20 minutes saw Hove dominate. Despite the young Islanders’ defence holding strong initially, the home side eventually broke through, scoring two tries in quick succession just before the half-time whistle, to lead 10-0. The half concluded 10-0 to the home side.
Jersey were unflustered, however. Under the coaching and guidance of Stewart Coombs and Gareth Davies, the Caesareans found their rhythm in the second half, retaining possession and finally being rewarded on the scoreboard.
Slick set-piece play and great team effort enabled Jacob Watson to run in two tries, with Eoin Mann adding a third.
Each of the three touchdowns was converted by the safe boot of Ryan Allen Le Bas.
Jersey continued to look strong throughout the second-half. Even after being reduced to 14 players, the visitors were unlucky not to have put more points on the board, especially with Oliver Ramage putting in a player of the match performance.
Jersey RFC extended their thanks to main sponsor, Santander International for their continued support, as well as SG Kleinwort Hambros for supporting the girls, and Jersey Sport for their generous travel grant funding.
