ONE of Jersey’s most promising up-and-coming athletes has just achieved one of his biggest ambitions, as Bradley Andrews-Callec has secured his place for Team GB in the upcoming World Athletics U20 Championships.
“Honestly, it’s still hard to believe,” said Andrews-Callec. “When I got the call, it was a mixture of relief, excitement and just pure happiness.
“I’ve dreamt about representing Team GB for as long as I can remember, so to know I’ll be wearing the GB vest at the World U20 Championships means everything to me.”
Coming out as one of the first 22 male athletes announced by British Athletics, Andrews-Callec is all set to head to Oregon for the Championships, which are taking place from the fifth – ninth of August.
Competing in the 3000m steeplechase, Andrews-Callec put himself firmly on the map in contention following his “sensational” performance early last month to smash the qualifying standard with a huge personal best of 8 mins 53 secs, in what was the “race of a lifetime” for the young prospect.
However, there’s been plenty more than that one race which has got Andrews-Callec to this point, as he continued: “There have been a lot of sacrifices and plenty of moments where things haven’t gone to plan, including the British Championships! But my family, coaches and everyone who’s supported me have always believed in me.”
Looking ahead, it’s fair to say that the Caesarean is relishing the opportunity to compete against the world’s best, adding: “I’m so grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to get out to Oregon, compete against the best in the world and give absolutely everything I have.
“It will also be quite scary! But, whatever happens out there, I’ll be proud to represent Jersey and Great Britain.”
