SAMURAI Fitness Group Jersey is extending an invite for all to enjoy an exciting martial-arts experience at the Royal Jersey Showground tomorrow, offering opportunities to those who are completely new to the sport while exhibiting the skill of those more experienced.

“This day is about giving children the chance to feel proud of themselves – whether that’s trying martial arts for the first time in the morning, or testing their skills in the afternoon tournament,” said Matt Collins, founder, chief executive and chief instructor of Samurai Kickboxing.

“The free Little Samurai session is particularly important to us, as it removes barriers and lets families see how martial arts can build confidence, focus and friendships.”

The event is split into two distinct parts, with a free morning event for young children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 (ages four to seven years) from 9-11am kicking off festivities.

Through games, movement and simple martial-arts challenges – all of them no contact – they’ll build balance, coordination and listening skills, while learning important social skills, such as team-work, taking turns and encouraging one another.

Collins, who has extensive experience in martial arts as a third degree black belt, couldn’t recommend it enough: “Last year’s free event was very successful, as more than 100 kids came down and got active away from screens.

“Unlike team sports, there’s no sort of peer pressure, enabling you to progress at your own pace.

“It’s great for kids, because it doesn’t only teach all-round physical literacy, but life skills, too. We always say we teach life skills through kickboxing, and you learn respect, discipline and gain awareness of your surroundings.”

Following that welcoming and gentle introduction to the sport, spectators will be treated to a martial arts tournament from 11.30am and running through the afternoon, giving young people from seven to 16 years of age the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a safe and supportive competitive environment.

Competitors will be battling for medals across multiple categories in a range of events, including high-kick challenges, power and technique demonstrations and controlled sparring for those appropriately graded and equipped.
