The grand final of yesterday’s boys’ hockey tournament, played at Fort Regent went right to the wire and beyond, with Durlston Court A beating Ballard A 5-4 on penalty flicks after a 1-1 draw. Nerves certainly played a part, right from the starting whistle to the ‘sudden death’ finale.
Top Island side were Victoria College who finished fourth, losing out 1-0 to Ballard in the semi-finals, then going down 2-1 in the 3rd/4th place play-off to Durlston B.

Yesterday morning, St Anselms clinched top spot in a round-robin girls hockey tournament for the Allen Plate.
With games only lasting eight minutes there was a pressing need to score goals quickly, and short corners played an influential part.
Festival newcomers St Anselms won six of their seven matches to finish on 33 points, following a draw with runners-up Ballard, and St Michael’s Jersey claimed third on 24 points.

St Michael’s (UK) won Wednesday’s premier football competition to lift the Chris Cook Cup, named in honour of the festival’s founder. They beat Belmont A 1-0 in a tense final. The victors’ Deon Van Schalkwyk commented: It was a well-taken goal that separated the two teams, but teamwork was the key in exploiting the width in the pitch. I’m very proud of our young players in not only winning the cup, but the spirited manner in which they worked hard and supported each other.’
Another to be impressed was Barney Cowie, director of sport at Kingswood House, England: ‘Without a doubt this has been one of the best Cook Cup competitions in recent memory. There was some great football on display and that set the tone for the week’.
The hosts just missed out on a final appearance, hitting the woodwork before going down on penalties after a goal-less semi-final with their UK namesakes (and eventual winners). Belmont reached the final after edging out Kingswood in their semi-final, 2-0.

Kingswood House B1 won the B competition, dominating possession in a 3-1 final success against Belmont B.

St Anselm’s won the C football cup at their first attempt, topping the round-robin group with three points more than runners-up Kingswood House.
The quality of football on display and level of commitment in the C cup caught the eye of St Anselm’s director of sport, Ben Wood, who said the players’ adaptability was credit to all in a tough and even competition.
