LESS than a year after making headlines for breaking out of his enclosure, Tango the capybara is back in the spotlight…
He has become the father of two baby capybaras at Jersey Zoo.
The babies, nicknamed “babybaras” by the Zoo, were born to Tango and his partner, Tayto, on Wednesday 10 June.
The births are another exciting moment for Tango, who became well known last summer after briefly escaping from his enclosure soon after arriving at the Zoo.
Tango’s adventure delayed the Zoo opening while keepers searched for him and safely brought him back.
Now, nearly a year later, he seems to have swapped exploring for family life, with zoo staff describing Tango and Tayto as proud parents.
Tango moved to Jersey Zoo from Drusillas Park in East Sussex to join female capybaras Tayto and Tatti as part of a breeding programme.
This is a plan to help care for and protect the world’s largest rodent species.
Capybaras come from South America, love spending time in the water, and can weigh more than 60kg.
The young capybaras are still gaining confidence and need time to settle into their new home.
As a result, some visitors might need to be patient to be able to catch a glimpse of them out and about.
