A SCHEME to introduce new seating, a pétanque area and outdoor fitness equipment at Marina Gardens has been submitted for planning approval, in a bid to boost community use of the St Helier green space.
The application, lodged by States-owned developer Jersey Development Company, proposes a series of “modest but meaningful enhancements” aimed at improving the usability and inclusivity of the area at the Waterfront.
According to the planning statement, the proposals include the installation of additional benches, two pétanque terrains and a small cluster of callisthenics equipment such as pull-up bars and step platforms. Callisthenics is a form of strength training that uses an individual’s body weight for resistance.
The site is described as a “centrally located public open space” used by residents, office workers and visitors. Developers said the improvements are designed to encourage a wider range of activities while maintaining the existing character of the gardens.
“The project introduces new recreational and seating features designed to support a wider range of activities, encourage community interaction, and promote health and wellbeing for users of all ages,” according to the application.
The pétanque areas would be constructed using compacted aggregate and positioned to avoid conflict with pedestrian routes, while the fitness equipment would be installed on safety surfacing around the edges of the field.
If approved, the “positive, low-impact enhancement” is expected to deliver community benefits including increased social interaction, improved wellbeing and greater use of the gardens.
