NEW trees will be planted along the now-pedestrianised Broad Street over the coming weeks as part of efforts to make the area greener and “more welcoming” for pedestrians.

The government said multiple new trees and planters would be installed as part of improvement works along the street, as well as around the Esplanade (Western Bus Gate).

At the same time, officials said they plan to give the existing trees in the area some “much needed care” to improve their growing conditions, and increase their lifespan.

The Infrastructure and Environment Department said the works are being carried out to “create a more welcoming pedestrian environment and contribute to long-term sustainable town greening”.

The planting follows the start of works to transform Broad Street into a pedestrian-priority zone.

The first phase, which began last September and was due to run until the end of March, focused on the “Gateway section” of the street.

Further works are planned in three additional phases, with the overall project expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Phase two will focus on the area around the Obelisk and Conway Street to Library Place, before moving to the Post Office to the Blue Note, and ultimately moving to Charing Cross.
