A LONG-SERVING Constable has confirmed she will not be standing in this summer’s election.
St Lawrence Constable Deidre Mezbourian was first elected to the States Assembly as a parish Deputy in 2005.
She stood successfully for Constable three years later and has held the position ever since.
“The traditions of our parish system are what make Jersey unique, and it has been my great privilege to serve the parishioners of St Lawrence for 21 years,” she said.
“As the oldest elected role in the States Assembly, Constables have been at the heart of parish life for centuries. I am honoured and humbled to be the longest-serving female Constable in Jersey’s history.”
During her time in the Assembly, Mrs Mezbourian has been chair of the Constable’s Committee, held a number of scrutiny roles and is both a former Assistant Home Affairs and Health Minister.
“My latest project in St Lawrence has been the development of new parish housing and municipal offices behind the Parish Hall, ensuring improved facilities for years to come,” she added.
“With that completed, I feel this is the right moment for me to move on.
“I am grateful to those staff, elected officers, volunteers and countless parishioners who have worked alongside me over eighteen years as Constable. Thank you for your dedication to the parish and for the support you have given to me.
“Above all, I owe more than words can express to my late husband, David, and to my daughter, Amber. Their unwavering love and support have carried me through 21 years of public service.
“As I prepare to retire from office, my priority is to leave the parish in a strong and well-managed position. Public roles may be temporary, but the responsibilities endure, and I hope the systems I have put in place will continue to serve parishioners well.”
Mrs Mezbourian becomes the second long-serving Constable to confirm they will be stepping down in June after St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft confirmed he will not be seeking re-election.
Islanders will head to the polls on Sunday 7 June – the first time a Jersey election has been held on the weekend.
