This small puffin was found floating by the edge of the sea at Le Braye on Tuesday. Taken alive but very weak to the JSCPA, the seabird unfortunately died later in the day.

ROUGH seas have caused a number of dead seabirds – particularly puffins – to be washed ashore on Jersey beaches.

The Natural Environment Department has said it is already aware of several reports of dead birds as a result of storms off the French coast, with fears that more may be found in the coming days.

As well as in Jersey, seabirds have also been reported in the other Channel Islands, France and the UK. The department has said it is working colleagues in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, France and the UK to monitor the situation.

The birds are not thought to be part of the Island’s small local breeding population.

Islanders are being asked to keep an eye out for dead and injured birds while visiting beaches and asked to report them to environment@gov.je or by contacting the Natural Environment Department on 441600.

Where possible, Islanders are asked to record the exact location by using the What3words app or a Google Maps and any leg ring that may be visible, but are advised not to collect or remove the bird.

The JSPCA Animals’ Shelter call also be called on 724331 during the daytime or on 07797 720331 out of hours.
