A DAY after Jersey’s new Deputy Bailiff was officially sworn in, his replacement as Attorney General was confirmed in the States Assembly.
Mark Temple took the Deputy Bailiff’s oath of office in the Royal Court on Monday.
During yesterday’s States sitting, the Bailiff Robert MacRae announced to Members that Solicitor General Matthew Jowitt had been appointed Attorney General. Mr Jowitt is set to take up his new role from March.
Following the completion of his studies at Oxford University, Mr Jowitt was called to the Bar of England and Wales where he practised as a barrister in London chambers before relocating to the Island in 2004.
After qualifying as a Jersey Advocate in 2006, he was then appointed a Crown Advocate, and later sworn in as Solicitor General in 2020.
Following the announcement of his appointment, Mr Jowitt said: “I am honoured to have the opportunity to serve Jersey as Attorney General, having been privileged to serve as Solicitor General since 2020.
“I look forward to continuing the good work of, and maintaining the very high standards set by, my predecessor Mark Temple KC and to working with my talented and supportive colleagues in the Law Officers’ Department.”
Mr MacRae added: “I was delighted to announce in the States Assembly this morning that Mr Jowitt has been named as the next Attorney General by His Majesty The King.”
“I am confident that Mr Jowitt will serve the Island with distinction and intergrity, and I wish him every success in his new role.”
