PORTS of Jersey has revealed how the departure lounge at Jersey Airport could look by summer 2027 as it pushes ahead with a major transformation of the “tired” facility.

Initial concept imagery has been released to provide an “early glimpse” of the project, which has been designed alongside a range of local stakeholders – including Brighter Futures, Connecting Communities, National Trust, Chamber of Commerce, Durrell, Jersey Architect Commission, Visit Jersey and ArtHouse Jersey.

Key changes include a “Martello tower-inspired” lift connecting to a new mezzanine level with views of the runway, as well as expanded dining and shopping options – including a bar and restaurant called “The Shoreline”.

There will also be a new family zone designed in collaboration with Brighter Futures and a ‘Sunflower Room’ to support passengers with hidden disabilities.

Granite, timber and native planting – intended to evoke Jersey themes – will be used within the redevelopment, which will also include Genuine Jersey shopping, food and beverage outlets, the No 1 Lounge, new toilets, an assisted travel lounge, sensory room, first aid room, and multi-faith room.

Speaking to the JEP, Ports of Jersey chief executive Matt Thomas said: “The airport’s 30 years old.”

He continued: “Part of the reason Ports of Jersey was incorporated was, maybe under government ownership, there wasn’t as much investment being made as there needed to be.

“So it looks a little bit tired, but I think there’s a huge opportunity.”

Mr Thomas contended that the Harbour and the Airport represented “the first and last impressions of the Island”.

“We don’t really want to be creating bus stations. We want to celebrate the entrance and exit,” he added.

“So we will be, over the next years, investing in both the Airport and Harbour in all aspects.

“The first part of the airport is the departure lounge.”

Preparatory work has already begun, with construction due to commence in February and the first phase expected to open in summer 2026 – with the whole new departure lounge completed by summer 2027.

“What that is going to mean is that we are going to be a building site for a period time,” Mr Thomas noted, although he stressed that “we are going to do everything we can to minimise the disruption during the build phase”.

He explained that passengers will be redirected through the airport, though services – including toilets, food and drink facilities and duty free – will be available.
