DOG owners can now let their pets roam free on the Island’s beaches following the lifting of the annual seasonal ban.
As of 1 October, dogs can be exercised off a lead at any time of the day. Horse owners are also allowed to use the beaches freely at any time from now on.
Seasonal restrictions for both animals apply each year from 1 May and 30 September.
During that time, dog owners are limited to exercising their pets freely without a lead from 10.30am to 6pm.
Horses are also banned from exercising on any beaches during those same hours between 1 May and 30 September.
Last year, a petition calling for “dedicated dog-friendly beaches” in the summer months gathered over 1,000 signatures. A similar petition in 2019 received more than 1,500 signatures.
Responding to the latest petition last September, Ministers said they “are mindful of the need to balance the interests of all beach users”.
They added that when considering changes to the regulations that govern dogs on beaches, any solution “must be proportionate” for all beach users and tourists.
“Islanders and visitors must be able to use Jersey’s beaches without being unduly affected by other people’s pets.”
