ISLANDERS are being urged to be “considerate and responsible” when carrying out controlled burnings after the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service responded to a false alarm.
The fire service received “several calls from concerned Islanders” about a blaze on piece of land near Five Oaks in St Saviour, according to a post on social media.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, it emerged that it was a controlled burning which had created a lot of smoke in the area.
Controlled burning relates to the burning of things like garden waste materials.
Station commander Ryan Hall said: “We’d remind people that if they are undertaking controlled burning of things like garden waste, they should inform our Control Room on 444705 so that if we receive calls from concerned people if they see smoke in a certain area, that we’re aware of the incident already and resources aren’t used attending it.
“Anyone undertaking controlled burning should also be aware of the area they’re using, being considerate of neighbours, and most importantly, ensure that water is easily on hand to extinguish the controlled burning, if needed.”
