HAVE you got any unused tins at the back of the kitchen cupboard?

A homelessness charity is encouraging Islanders and businesses to donate tins in the return of the Tinathon, which takes place on Friday 10 October to coincide with World Homeless Day.

Volunteers from the Shelter Trust will be fundraising and collecting donations and non-perishable foods at West’s Centre between 8am and 2.30pm.

The Shelter Trust is the Island’s largest provider of accommodation and support services for homeless people in Jersey. Every night, 100 Islanders require the charity’s services at seven locations around St Helier.

The tins collected at the Tinathon will help stock the shelter’s kitchens and go directly into food parcels for Islanders in need.

Last year alone, the charity distributed more than 1,500 food parcels.

At the event on 10 October, live music and entertainment will be provided. It is being sponsored by LGT Wealth Management.

For those who cannot attend the event, ‘e-tins’ can be donated online, and collection bins will be in several local supermarket chains throughout October.

Mike Powell, chair of the Shelter Trust, said the Tinathon is about “much more than donating food” and offers Islanders the chance to support the charity’s wider work.

“Homelessness in Jersey may not always be visible on our streets, but it is a reality for many, and it can happen to anyone,” Mr Powell said.

“By supporting the Tinathon, Islanders are helping us continue this vital work and ensuring that those in need are treated with dignity, compassion, and hope.”

How Islanders can support Tinathon

Organise a collection at your workplace. (For large donations of 50+ tins, email tinathonjersey@hotmail.co.uk to arrange collection in the three days leading up to the event, or bring them directly to West’s Centre on the day.)

Drop off tins or cash/card donations at West’s Centre on 10 October. If you cannot attend in person, you can donate an e-tin online via the Just Giving page.

Buy a tin or two and leave donations in collection bins at all Waitrose, Alliance, and M&S stores, Co-op Grand Marché St Helier (throughout October), Communicare St Brelade, and many churches across the island.

Encourage pupils to bring tins to any of the twenty participating schools.
